Additional Information

Volunteer

40 total hours of Community Involvement Activity Hours Volunteer work that fits your interests, hobbies, or personality can help you develop leadership skills and give you a unique experience using your talents to benefit your community.

Your school may organize volunteer opportunities for you, but you can also volunteer at a place of worship near your home, such as a church or cathedral. If you attended high school in their home country, some of your volunteer hours will count, so you don't have to complete the full 40 hours.

Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT)

The OSSLT test is administered annually in all Ontario high schools between mid-March and mid-April to assess the English language proficiency of Ontario high school students, although the test date may vary depending on the student.

All Ontario high school students, whether Canadian citizens or international students, must pass the test to earn a diploma, and it can be previewed as early as Grade 10, rather than taken in the final year of high school (Grade 12). The difficulty level of the OSSLT exam is appropriate for students who have attended school in Ontario with the Ontario Curriculum up to Grade 9.

You will be tested in reading and writing for approximately two and a half hours, and you must score at least 300 out of 400 to pass.

OSSLT test types

What if you don't pass the OSSLT on your first try? There are two solutions. The first is to wait a year and retake the test in March, and the second is to complete the Ontario Literacy Course (OLC4O), which can replace the OSSLT passing requirement
